HOW TO REPAINT WOODEN FURNITURE
A new coat of paint is an easy way to breathe new life into an old chair or piece of furniture. It’s simple: a few basic tools and some time. This is an ideal weekend project, and the transformation will surprise you! Paint expert, Rian, shows us how to repaint a chair.
Step 1
To start, grab a piece of 100-grit sandpaper. Sand with (not against) the grain of the wood, enough to break the surface of the top layer.
Step 2
After sanding, remove any residue with a turpentine cloth. Dust acts like grease and will cause your paint to lift later.
Step 3
Use a primer for an even look. Using a paintbrush, gently brush an even coat on the surface of the wood. You only need to apply one coat of primer. Allow the primer to dry before painting.
Step 4
Apply the topcoat using a water-based enamel of your choice. It’s best to apply two coats. Remember to stir the paint before use, and to use a soft brush for an even finish.
Step 5
Leave the chair in an open area to dry. To clean your brushes, use water for water-based paints (plastic container), and mineral turpentine for solvent-based ones (steel container). Never use thinners to clean wooden furniture.
